A cerebral book with a sense of humor, TRI WORLDS It’s Time to Think as a Species argues that humanity’s current social order can’t provide human survival and planetary integrity in the future without some significant conceptual modifications.
Citizens in every country pledge allegiance to their nation’s ideals, goals and culture but they make no such commitments to our species and the planet. We human beings have differentiated ourselves into so many nationalities, religions, social classes, and other divisions that our closely held values now confront species survival. Climate change, depletion of non-renewable resources, eco-destruction and other indicators of natural decline will not go away because we pridefully identify ourselves as fractions that deny or ignore the wholes of species and planet.
Not afraid to tackle big issues, TRI WORLDS argues that human sameness needs to be elevated in importance on every individual and national agenda if our species and planet are to survive and prosper. All human beings exist in three worlds concurrently their entire lives: the natural world; the human-made world; and the ethereal ‘me’ world. These tri worlds are our species’ common bond. Genetically, we’re all 99.9% the same. We also share the same sensibilities, emotions and fears and we all pursue the same life’s basics. Race, religion, ethnicity or nationality do not matter one bit at this core level of existence.
Instead of building upon our sameness, however, we humans have chosen to emphasize our differences and then to highly value each elaborately constructed identity. Dualism and differentiation among the species form innumerable pockets of group think that claim exceptional worth for followers while the larger issues of species survival and natural integrity get downplayed or disregarded.
Transitioning away from the dominance of ‘local’ mindsets to an outlook more balanced with the universal realities of human sameness and natural integrity has tremendous potential for the species’ future. The
Leaders in every nation need to acknowledge the suzerainty of species survival and natural integrity then focus their followers’ energies toward the worthwhile ends of sustenance, security and comfort – goals all humans pursue.
Democracy and capitalism need to recognize nature’s limitations or both will be replaced by systems that do. Women need to step up and lead. Men have dominated human decision making long enough. Government funds need to benefit the common good – education, health (mental and physical), overcoming poverty, infrastructure.
We need to mature as a species by acknowledging our human commonalities, by elevating species survival and natural integrity on every personal and national agenda, and by moving enthusiastically toward an economic system that develops a global middle class in sustainable fashion. Tri Worlds thinking is the anthesis to Tea Bag Party thoughtlessness.
Wars, debt, exceptional identities and political/religious/social antipathies are diversions we can no longer afford; they are, from a species-wide point of view, a waste of time and energy. It’s time for a new Enlightenment.
